A Shopify theme or a custom storefront: how to decide

  • Choose a theme if the catalogue, checkout and the team that edits the store all fit it.
  • Choose a custom storefront if the purchase path, the search or the speed cannot be done without fighting the theme.
  • We build custom storefronts. A theme is often the right call, and we will say so.

Choose a theme if. Merchandisers can publish a collection, a product and a landing page without a developer, and the missing piece is something the theme or one well-supported app already does.

Choose a custom storefront if. The sale happens in a way the theme cannot represent, such as buying inside a live show, or the pages get slower every time you add products and apps.

Three situations

A fashion shop adding a lookbook

The theme already has a story page and the checkout is fine. A custom storefront would rebuild a working shop. Stay on the theme.

A brand whose live show loses the sale

Viewers leave the stream to find the product. The theme cannot pin a product and take payment in the show. That is a custom storefront, or live commerce, and the two are not the same scope.

A catalogue that outgrew the apps

Search returns nothing for ordinary words, and two stock apps disagree. Start by naming which app is the source of stock. Then decide whether the theme can still present it. Often the storefront and the stock link are both in the scope.

What a theme is good at

A theme is a storefront the platform already knows how to host, edit and upgrade. Content changes stay with the people who run the shop. Checkout, tax and payments are the platform's. For a lot of stores that is the whole job, and a custom build would be an expensive way to get the same pages.

The failure mode is slow and quiet. Each missing feature becomes an app. The apps do not share one idea of a product. The theme file is no longer something anyone wants to edit. At that point the theme is not cheaper. It is a project you are paying for in incidents.

What a custom storefront changes

A custom storefront replaces the pages shoppers see. It can stay on Shopify for the catalogue, the cart and the checkout, or it can be headless. The point is the pages and the purchase path, not a new logo. A keyboard user has to be able to buy. Old URLs are mapped before launch so a redesign does not throw away the addresses people and search engines already use.

It is the wrong buy when the team cannot name the one thing the theme cannot do. The longer comparison of front-end setups is headless or a theme. The signs are collected in has your store outgrown its theme?

What we'd build

If the theme is the limit, we scope a defined storefront and a written launch date. If the theme is fine, the call ends there.
